Reflection on Classroom Climate

A positive classroom environment is the key to a successful school year. Without a good learning environment we cannot expect our students to be successful. A key aspect to a positive classroom environment is the relationship between the student and teacher (Marzano, 2007).

Strategies for promoting a positive classroom climate:
  • Get to know your students (Marzano, 2007):
    • Use a questionnaire at the beginning of the year to obtain key details about your students lives
    • Have a photo wall of your students with a place for them to update their feelings     or current events in their lives (Marzano, 2007).
    • Focus on speaking with one to two students per day (Marzano, 2007).
    • Incorporate your students interests into the lessons to engage them (Marzano, 2007)
  • Use humor when appropriate (Marzano, 2007).
  • Be mindful of physical actions (Marzano, 2007)
    • Smile
    • Make eye contact
    • Look interested in what students have to say
  • Be there for your students (Rimm-Kaufma, n.d.).
    • Answer their questions within a reasonable timeframe
    • Offer support when where it seems appropriate
    • Help them reflect on their learning goals and skills
  • Difficult Students
    • Reframe their behaviors in a way that makes them more understandable. Do not always assume it is in response to you (Marzano, 2007).
    • Spend more time getting to know them; develop their trust (Rimm-Kaufma, n.d.).
  • Be Consistent (Marzano, 2007).
    • Evaluate at the end of the day how consistent you were when disciplining and praising students.
Incorporating social and emotional education is also an important step to setting up students for success. Research has shown that an increase in emotional intelligence allows the student to be more open to learning and provides them with an ability to retain more information. Education like this can be incorporated within existing curriculum and assignments or be taught as a completely different topic/lesson (Smart Hearts, 2010). There are pros and cons to incorporating social and emotional education in these ways, but personally I think that the separate lessons would be more appropriate for younger children, while the curriculum that is incorporated into existing assignments might be more appropriate for older school children.

The classroom is not always about what subject the students are learning, it is about the environment they are learning within.

Objective Driven Technooogy Use in the Classroom

Objectives:
  • Objectives provide a way to measure how effective your assignment was. (1)
  • Objectives are a way to lay out what your students learning outcome will be from the lesson. (1)
  • It is not the process of the learning but the expected result/outcome. (1)
  • Objectives are very specific and leave very little room for interpretation. They answer the 5 W 1 H. (2)
  • Technology can be included into the objective as a condition under which the student is to master the objective. (2)
  • Technology should not be added just for the sake of it. It should serve a definable purpose. (2)
Example Objective: Student will show a mastery in United States Geography by being able to identify all 50 states and their Capitals.

Appropriate usage of technology for this objective:
  •  Using a State Capitals interactive game to practice mastery along the way. 
  • The teacher could also use a video with a catchy song to help students learn. 
  • Another option would be to use Google Earth and let the student explore the country from that perspective. 
  • Ultimately the mastery portion of the objective will most likely be tested without technology like through a pen and paper exam or quiz.
